"MEWA"
The Mewa Washing Station in West Arsi, is located in the highlands of Oromia, a region in central-eastern Ethiopia. At altitudes exceeding 1900 meters, it produces high-quality coffee known for its distinct flavors, shaped by the region's rich soil, humid climate, and cool temperatures. The producers are primarily smallholder farmers who manually grow and harvest their coffee using traditional methods. Most farms span just 2 to 9 hectares and are family-run operations. They practice sustainable agriculture in harmony with nature, using minimal or no chemical pesticides.
The harvested cherries are brought to the washing station, where they are carefully processed to ensure quality. This coffee is a classic washed variety, dried gently in the shade over a period of three weeks after washing. In recent years, the West Arsi region has gained attention as an emerging coffee origin, earning high praise at Ethiopia’s Cup of Excellence.
This is a classic washed coffee with a clean and elegant profile. To preserve the quality of the green beans, I kept the roast simple and light. The roasting time was just under 9 minutes and 30 seconds, with steady heat applied at the beginning to draw out fruity notes. Near the first crack, I slightly reduced the heat, allowing for a development time of about one minute to retain the coffee’s vibrant floral characteristics.
When you pour hot water over the grounds, a refined and delicate aroma wafts up, creating a small moment of indulgence in your daily routine. Be sure to savor the fragrance that rises from the server after brewing—it’s an integral part of the experience.
The flavor is reminiscent of jasmine tea, with a bright and graceful character. Notes of honey, orange, and apricot bring a pleasantly fruity sweetness. When freshly brewed, the coffee offers herbal impressions, but as it cools, the fruity nuances become more pronounced. The body is light, with a smooth and soft texture that accentuates its clean finish. It’s a coffee that feels as if it melts effortlessly into your body with every sip.
