<Colombia El Placer>

El Placer Farm is located near San Antonio in Tolima, one of Colombia’s most renowned coffee-producing regions. Situated at a high elevation of 2,100–2,150 meters, the farm benefits from a cool climate and rich natural environment—ideal conditions for cultivating exceptional coffee. The total area of the farm is approximately 30 hectares, of which only 4 hectares are dedicated to coffee production. Despite its small scale, the farm is meticulously managed. Access is also challenging, requiring a two-hour walk from the nearest road, reflecting both the remoteness and uniqueness of this land.

At this high altitude, coffee cherries mature slowly, allowing sugars and flavors to develop fully. This results in a cup profile with depth and complexity. Additionally, the farm sits on a plateau, ensuring consistent sunlight throughout the day, which contributes significantly to stable quality.

The farm is led by Jesús Antonio, who is deeply committed to post-harvest processing. Through careful sorting and controlled pulping, he prevents contamination and maintains clean cup quality. Fermentation and drying are also managed with great precision, with the final moisture content carefully adjusted to 10–11%. His forward-thinking approach dates back to the late 1980s, when he relocated the farm to higher elevations in response to climate change. This decision laid the foundation for the high-quality coffee production seen today. Beyond coffee, he actively supports the local community, including contributing to educational opportunities by supporting a school within the farm.

The varieties grown include Castillo, Colombia, and Caturra. Each variety interacts with the terroir to create a diverse and expressive flavor profile. El Placer is a coffee born from the harmony of natural environment, technical expertise, and human dedication—offering a true reflection of Colombia’s rich coffee culture.

We first encountered this coffee at a cupping session. On the first tasting, we were immediately drawn to its vibrant and juicy fruit character, reminiscent of apple, stone fruits, and citrus. With each subsequent cup, we became increasingly captivated by its smooth, syrupy mouthfeel.

To fully showcase both the fruitiness and texture, we chose a light roast profile. During sample roasting, we initially applied higher heat in the early stage to enhance fruit expression, but found the result somewhat delicate. We then adjusted the profile by applying moderate heat in the mid-phase, allowing both the juiciness and body to shine.

The final cup offers a beautiful balance of brightness and roundness. Expect flavors reminiscent of apple and apricot, evoking the sweetness of fruit nectar. As the coffee cools, subtle citrus nuances emerge. Despite the light roast, it features a pleasantly smooth and syrup-like mouthfeel.
