<Gitura>
Established in 1980, the Gitura washing station is located in the Murang’a region near Nairobi and serves around 700 farmers from the villages of Gaite, Miakini, Giti, and Mahuga. Only fully ripe red cherries are carefully handpicked, then processed using an efficient water recycling system and ten conditioning bins. After pulping with water density sorting, the coffee undergoes fermentation, soaking, washing, and is then sun-dried on African beds. The parchment is rested for 30–40 days in wooden silos to stabilize the flavors before final milling.
The vivid acidity and fruit-forward profile that Kenyan coffees are renowned for come from such meticulous processing. Gitura is part of the Iego Cooperative, known for its strong commitment to quality. Farmers adhere to strict guidelines for pruning, weeding, pest management, and fertilization. They also interplant macadamia trees, reclaim abandoned farmland, and invest in sustainable agriculture. At the factory, four “wastewater infiltration pits” help return processed water safely to the environment, reflecting their dedication not only to producing high-quality coffee but also to protecting the land.
This is our latest crop of Kenyan coffee! Along with the lively, bright acidity characteristic of Kenya, this lot delivers plenty of sweetness. We roasted it lightly, with a slow roast development of just under 10 minutes. After first crack, we allowed just over a minute of development to preserve the coffee’s vibrant fruit character, resulting in a juicy, balanced cup.
The ground coffee releases a sweet fragrance reminiscent of dried fruits. In the cup, expect flavors of ripe mandarin orange, cassis, and apricot, complemented by brown sugar sweetness. The liquid itself feels dense and concentrated, with a “packed” intensity that is unmistakably Kenyan. Served hot, it offers a silky smooth texture; served over ice, it reveals an even juicier, fruit-driven profile.
With its generous sweetness and bold fruit character, this is a coffee for both long-time Kenya lovers and first-timers alike. A cup so flavorful and compelling, you’ll find yourself reaching for another.
