<Clara Luz>
This farm was established in 1935 by Neptalí González and Clara Luz Jiménez, and has supported the family’s livelihood for generations. In the 1990s, however, the farm faced a period of decline due to falling coffee prices and the impact of plant diseases. In 2014, the next generation stepped forward and began a new chapter, pursuing specialty coffee once again. While honoring tradition, they introduced new varieties such as Geisha and implemented precise processing methods. Today, the farm has grown into a highly acclaimed producer, with awards including Golden Cup, Best of Loja, and Cup of Excellence.
Servio, who now supports the farm, originally worked in banana cultivation in the coastal region. After returning to his hometown of Loja, he developed a deep passion for coffee farming. During the 2024 harvest, when his father fell ill, his son Juan attended a cupping session in his place. He shared a new dream with us: “I want to roast and deliver my father’s coffee with my own hands.” The passion passed down through generations is truly embodied in this coffee.
This farm, Finca Clara Luz, has also captured the heart of Mitsuru Mochizuki of Rurukuna Ink—an admired roaster and a dear friend of ours—who continues to visit every year. Through his yearly reports, the charm of this farm is vividly conveyed.
The coffee is cultivated on plots along the mountainside, where native shade trees and afternoon mist protect the plants from strong sunlight. In this fertile environment, fruits such as oranges, papayas, and bananas are also grown, reflecting the richness and vitality of the land—qualities that are expressed in the coffee itself.
Drawing on his knowledge as an agronomist, Servio places great importance on soil health and environmental sustainability. He avoids the use of herbicides, instead focusing on cultivation methods that bring out the natural potential of the land. In recent years, the farm has also been working with Ethiopian heirloom varieties and Typica Mejorado, striving for even higher quality. Despite the challenges of fluctuating yields and changing climate conditions, their commitment to improvement remains unwavering.
The land, nurtured over generations, and the passion carried forward through time—
all of this is contained within a single cup.
Following last year, this marks our second time offering this coffee. Its rich sweetness reflects the strength of the land, while its clean finish speaks to the care taken in its production. People, land, and variety—this is a cup that fully expresses the beauty of terroir.
To highlight these qualities, we chose a light roast profile. In the early stages of roasting, we apply sufficient heat to draw out floral and berry-like aromatics. The heat is then adjusted relatively early, allowing the latter stages to progress more gradually, carefully balancing the overall profile.
This is a favorite among Tetsu Kasuya and the Philocoffea team. From the moment the beans are ground, fruity aromas reminiscent of apple and cassis fill the air. When hot, the cup reveals elegant floral notes characteristic of Geisha, along with a bright, refreshing green apple-like acidity. As it cools, berry notes reminiscent of cassis emerge, gradually shifting toward impressions of red fruits. Despite being lightly roasted, a gentle honey-like sweetness envelops the cup, creating a well-balanced experience through to the last sip.
We hope you enjoy this vibrant and sweet expression of Geisha—nurtured by the blessings of the land and the passion of a family.
