<Kegwa Factory>
Kegwa Coffee Factory is located in Kirinyaga, central Kenya, one of the country's most renowned coffee-producing regions.
Established in 1960, Kegwa was originally built to process coffee grown in four surrounding villages: Kegwa, Muiboini, Sieni, and Kitiga.
Today, the factory operates under the Ngiriambu Farmers Cooperative Society, with approximately 1,400 registered smallholder farmers. Of these, around 1,000 farmers deliver their harvested coffee cherries to Kegwa each year.
Located at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the area is blessed with rich red volcanic soil, temperatures ranging from 13°C to 25°C, and annual rainfall of around 1,200 mm.
The main coffee varieties grown here include SL28 and SL34, both well-known Kenyan varieties, along with Ruiru 11 and Batian.
After harvesting, the coffee cherries are carefully hand-sorted before being delivered to Kegwa, where they undergo a traditional Kenyan washed process.
First, the cherries are depulped and fermented overnight. The coffee is then washed and soaked before being dried on raised African beds for approximately 8–15 days.
Rather than relying on experimental fermentation or complicated processing methods, Kegwa focuses on carefully selecting high-quality cherries and processing them using traditional techniques.
It's a wonderful example of classic Kenyan coffee production.
Water used during processing comes from the nearby Nyamindi River.
Since washed coffee processing requires a significant amount of water, responsible wastewater management is especially important.
At Kegwa, wastewater treatment pits are located away from the water source. Wastewater generated during processing is treated before being returned to the soil, helping protect the surrounding environment and local water resources.
When we first tasted this coffee, we found its flavor profile a little unexpected.
When we think of Kenyan coffee, we often imagine juicy fruit flavors and bright, lively acidity that really stands out.
But Kegwa was different.
Its fruitiness was softer and more gentle, with a subtle herbal aroma lingering in the finish. That delicate herbal character was particularly appealing to us.
We immediately imagined this coffee as a smooth, comforting dark roast—the kind of coffee you'd want to enjoy slowly on a cold day.
That was one of the reasons we decided to select this lot.
Even within the same dark roast category, our roasting approach changes depending on the flavors we want to express.
For example, with 451 Ethiopia Gera, we use higher heat and a shorter roasting time to preserve the vibrant flavors characteristic of Ethiopian coffee, even at a darker roast level.
For this Kegwa, however, we wanted to create something different: a coffee with a fuller body, a smooth texture, and a gentle sweetness that gradually unfolds in the cup.
To achieve this, we extended the roasting time to approximately 10 minutes, carefully developing the sweetness and mouthfeel.
Of course, simply roasting darker would risk losing the unique qualities of this coffee.
That's why we decided to finish the roast just before the second crack, creating the richness and depth of a dark roast while preserving some of the fruit character that makes Kenyan coffee so special.
When freshly brewed, this coffee offers the satisfying bitterness and sweetness you'd expect from a dark roast.
Rich flavors of dark chocolate and roasted almonds are complemented by subtle black tea notes.
As the coffee cools, gentle fruit flavors begin to emerge, reminiscent of dried orange and dark cherry.
Its full, rich body and smooth, viscous texture bring together the bitterness, sweetness, and acidity, allowing the flavors to unfold slowly and pleasantly across the palate.
The first few sips deliver the bold, comforting character of a classic dark roast. As the temperature drops, the coffee gradually reveals a softer, more delicate side.
With its generous sweetness and well-rounded flavor, this coffee is a wonderful choice not only for those who regularly enjoy dark roasts, but also for relaxing coffee moments shared with family.
We hope you'll enjoy discovering the gentle, comforting character of this special Kenyan coffee!
