Thank you for visiting Philocoffea.
Finca El Mirador is located in the Acatenango region, an area gaining recognition as one of Guatemala’s high-quality coffee origins. The farm lies about 80 km west of Guatemala City, with the renowned Antigua region situated on the opposite side of Volcán de Fuego.
The coffee is grown on the western slopes of Volcán de Fuego and Volcán Acatenango, where mineral-rich volcanic ash soils, formed through volcanic activity, provide an excellent foundation for coffee cultivation. Gentle winds from the Pacific Ocean help prevent frost while maintaining balanced humidity. The surrounding forests contribute to a rich ecosystem, creating an ideal environment for growing expressive coffees.
The farm is managed by SUBE, an export company founded by coffee producers. Drawing on agricultural expertise developed at the renowned Platanillo farm in the San Marcos region, SUBE has planted Geisha on approximately half of the farm and Pacamara on the remaining half, with a strong focus on quality-driven cultivation. Taking full advantage of the high elevation and favorable climate, Finca El Mirador prioritizes cup clarity and expression over yield, truly showcasing the potential of the Acatenango region.
When we first cupped the samples, we were struck by the grape-like fruit character and silky mouthfeel, which immediately inspired us to roast this coffee as a “slow-building, deeply satisfying dark roast.” Roasting Pacamara—with its large bean size—always requires careful attention. By gradually increasing heat and allowing ample development time, we aimed to bring out a rich sweetness and depth in the cup.
The result is a dark roast with a pleasant bitterness, layered with deep fruit notes of grape and subtle plum. Sweet nuances reminiscent of walnut and brown sugar add complexity, creating a well-balanced interplay between bitterness and acidity. The signature rich, rounded mouthfeel of Pacamara makes this coffee especially enjoyable, offering a cohesive and satisfying cup well-suited for everyday drinking.
