Gachika Coffee Factory>

Established in 1985, Gachika Coffee Factory is a washing station located in a cool, high-altitude region traditionally considered more suitable for tea cultivation than coffee. Situated in Gatundu, Kiambu County in central Kenya at an elevation of 1,898 meters, the area is surrounded by lush greenery. Despite the climate favoring tea, approximately 750 smallholder farmers passionately cultivate distinctive coffees here.

The varieties grown include Kenya’s iconic SL28, along with Batian and Ruiru 11. Rich red volcanic soil, dramatic temperature differences between day and night, and the slow maturation that comes with high-altitude cultivation all contribute to producing coffees with concentrated sweetness and vibrant character.

After harvest, the cherries are carefully processed using clean water sourced from the Theta River. Following depulping, the coffee undergoes washing and soaking, a process that enhances the clean and lively acidity for which Kenyan coffees are renowned. The beans are then slowly dried on African raised beds, where they are frequently turned and meticulously hand-sorted throughout the drying period to ensure exceptional quality.

Environmental sustainability is also an important part of Gachika Coffee Factory’s philosophy. The factory has installed wastewater infiltration systems to prevent processing water from flowing directly into rivers and actively promotes tree-planting initiatives, helping preserve the rich natural environment for future generations.

The new crop from Kenya has finally arrived!

Whenever we roast Kenyan coffees, we find ourselves debating between two styles: a light roast that showcases their juicy, vibrant acidity, or a darker roast that highlights their rich sweetness and fruit character. This time, we chose the latter.

Our goal was to create a cup that offers both the comforting bitterness of a dark roast and the vivid fruitiness unique to Kenya. The roast time is just under ten minutes, with the heat gradually reduced in the latter stages to carefully control bitterness while preserving sweetness and complexity.

The first impression in the cup is a rich bitterness and sweetness reminiscent of dark chocolate. Then, layer by layer, flavors of blueberry jam, dark cherry, and dried orange begin to emerge, creating a beautifully complex profile.

Every time we taste a well-roasted Kenyan coffee like this, we are reminded of just how delicious it can be. The cup is packed with a variety of flavors, and each sip seems to reveal a new expression.

The mouthfeel is smooth and syrupy, with a comforting weight and richness. During the warmer months, we especially recommend enjoying it as flash-chilled iced coffee or cold brew. Even when served cold, its fruitiness and sweetness remain vibrant, making it the perfect coffee to enjoy on a hot day.

One bag for every household.
A vibrant dark-roasted Kenyan coffee that everyone in the family can enjoy.
