<Gedeb Worka>

On the eastern side of the Yirgacheffe region lies the Gedeo Zone, which is divided into six districts—one of which is Gedeb.

Located about 434 km south of Addis Ababa, the capital, this area used to take nearly eight hours to reach by car. However, since the opening of a new road in 2016, travel time has been reduced to about three hours.

In this region, a quarter of the land is planted with coffee, making it one of the most suitable areas for coffee cultivation in all of Ethiopia. Gedeb is further divided into sixteen administrative divisions, and one of them is Worka Sakaro. The area features well-drained slopes and dense greenery, creating ideal conditions for natural and sustainable farming. Around the coffee trees, many Enset (false banana) trees grow. Their fallen leaves decompose naturally, turning into compost that enriches the soil with nitrogen and creates soft, fertile earth.

The name “Worka” means “gold” in the local Gedeo language. According to local stories, when an officer serving under Ethiopia’s last emperor, Haile Selassie, visited the area, he was deeply impressed by the people’s warm hospitality and began calling it “the land of gold.”

The Worka Sakaro Washing Station has been operated by Ranger, a subsidiary of BNT, since the 2019 crop year. With a team of skilled staff who are compensated fairly, they carry out meticulous processing and drying, striving to produce the finest Yirgacheffe coffees yet.

“About BNT”

You may have noticed the name BNT — this is a well-known export company based in Ethiopia, frequently seen on the coffee menus of roasters and cafés in Japan.

The company was founded by two partners, Bire and Teddy. Teddy first gained experience in the coffee industry while working for another company, and later invited his former university classmate, Bire — who was then working in international development — to join him in founding BNT.

Since the beginning, their motto has been:

“PAY FAIR, GET FINEST.”

Pay fairly, and you will obtain the finest.

In the early days, they struggled with both quality and financing. But as coffee lovers themselves, they often visited customers, shared cups of coffee, listened to feedback, and continuously improved their practices.

Today, BNT works under exclusive contracts with 45 washing stations across regions such as Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Guji, while also owning several stations directly through its subsidiaries. Their commitment to pre-harvest payments to farmers, ripe cherry picking, careful washing processes, slow drying, and precise sorting at their own milling facilities ensures high-quality coffees with distinct character.

At their processing mill, they’ve recently added another color sorter to further reduce defects and are expanding the facility to improve space and efficiency. Their openness to feedback and continuous drive for improvement are key to their ongoing quality excellence.

As the weather cools, it’s the perfect time for something a little sweet and comforting.

This coffee is lightly roasted, but we’ve lowered the charge temperature and extended the roast time slightly to bring out a round, satisfying sweetness.

During brewing, a sweet aroma reminiscent of peach and honey rises from the dripper — it’s one of those moments that makes you smile and think, “Yes, this is it.”

In the cup, you’ll find flavors of raspberry and apricot, followed by a gentle sweetness reminiscent of hazelnut and milk chocolate. The texture is smooth and soft, spreading effortlessly across the palate, and the sweet, fruity aftertaste lingers pleasantly.

The bright fruitiness makes it perfect for a refreshing morning cup,

while the gentle sweetness offers a soothing afternoon break.

This versatile Ethiopian natural can accompany many different moments throughout your day.

We hope you’ll enjoy it.
