Thank you for visiting Philocoffea.

The Kii Coffee Factory is located in Kirinyaga, in the central part of Kenya. Established in 1968, it oversees the villages of Gathanjuri, Kibae, Kianduma, and Kiandumbe. This factory operates under the umbrella of the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society and boasts the highest production volume among the cooperative's factories. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,619 meters, the region's red soil is rich in minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. The area experiences two rainy seasons each year, with about 1,400 mm of rainfall and ideal average temperatures ranging from 13°C to 24°C. Consequently, there are usually two harvest periods in April and October. The primary coffee varieties grown here are SL28 and SL34, which together account for 99% of the total production, with Ruiru 11 making up the remaining 1%.

The factory places a strong emphasis on environmental conservation. Efforts include installing wastewater pits to filter and return water to the soil using natural soil layers, and promoting tree planting among member farmers. In terms of cultivation, the factory provides technical advice on weeding, pruning, irrigation, and fertilization through farmer training programs and field inspections conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture. Additionally, as part of their welfare initiatives, the factory supports farmers by investing in agricultural materials and offering advance payment services to maintain their motivation.

We have finished this juicy Kenyan new crop with a light roast. The roasting process involved trial and error to create a sweetness that supports the bright acidity. We extended the time until the first crack to achieve a soft impression reminiscent of mandarin oranges.

When warm, the juicy acidity reminiscent of red fruits is clearly noticeable. As time passes, the citrus sweetness becomes more pronounced, transitioning to a more balanced and pleasant flavor. The aftertaste is pleasantly marked by hints of raw sugar and tea-like notes, offering a delightful finish. It is also recommended to enjoy it as iced coffee, much like fruit juice.
