Planadas, located in Tolima, Colombia, was under guerrilla influence until the early 2000s and could hardly be described as a prosperous environment. Reaching the farm is no easy task—you must travel more than four hours along unpaved roads and even cross small streams. However, once you set foot on the farm, you are immediately struck by its remarkable potential.

This lot is a Geisha variety produced by Jorge, who operates his own farm, “La Roca,” in Planadas while also managing processing for neighboring producers. For this coffee, he used cherries from El Paraiso, a high-altitude farm in Planadas, and applied his processing expertise to fully express the potential of the Geisha variety.

Jorge is the son of a third-generation coffee-producing family in Planadas and began pursuing specialty-grade production four to five years ago. His dedication quickly bore fruit: in his first-ever entry to the Cup of Excellence in 2022, he achieved an impressive 3rd place, followed by 24th place in 2023. His passion for coffee production continues to grow. That passion is now being passed on to the next generation—his son placed 2nd in a kids’ Cup Tasters competition, marking this as a producer family with a bright future.

Although we initially considered roasting this lot darker, we ultimately chose a light roast to highlight its complex fruit character. Rather than a purely “clean and delicate” profile, this coffee offers a vivid and intriguing cup. Its juicy, vibrant acidity is truly captivating.

At the cupping table, the very first impression that came to mind was apple brandy—like slowly sipping a warm glass of apple brandy on a cold winter day. Notes of sultana raisins and dried figs bring a sweet-tart fruit character, while as the cup cools, hints of orange-like citrus begin to emerge, adding further complexity. When freshly roasted, the acidity can feel lively with a slight ferment-like sparkle, but as the coffee rests, this impression softens, evolving into a more rounded and layered expression. Personally, we recommend enjoying it around 15 days after roasting, when brightness and sweetness are in beautiful balance.

Experience the rich fruit character unique to Planadas and the expressive processing of Jorge.

We invite you to take your time and savor this vibrant, spirit-like cup with depth and elegance.
